PUJ Obstruction (Pelvi-Ureteric Junction Obstruction)

PUJ obstruction is a condition where the junction between the kidney (renal pelvis) and ureter becomes narrowed or blocked, preventing urine from draining properly into the bladder. This causes urine to accumulate in the kidney, leading to hydronephrosis, pain, infections, and possible long-term kidney damage if not treated on time. It is commonly detected during prenatal or postnatal ultrasound, and early evaluation by a paediatric urologist ensures proper management and kidney protection.

  • Narrowing/blockage at the kidney–ureter junction.
  • Causes urine buildup, leading to hydronephrosis.
  • May present as flank pain, vomiting, or urinary infections.
  • Often detected in prenatal or postnatal ultrasound scans.
  • Diagnosis confirmed with ultrasound, DTPA/MAG3 scan, or MRI.
  • Mild cases may only need monitoring and follow-up.
  • Severe obstruction requires surgical repair (pyeloplasty).
  • Laparoscopic/robotic surgery offers quick recovery and excellent long-term kidney function.
