Posterior Urethral Valves

Posterior Urethral Valves is a serious congenital condition seen in baby boys, where extra tissue (valves) in the urethra blocks the normal flow of urine from the bladder. This obstruction increases pressure on the bladder and kidneys, leading to difficulty in urination, urinary infections, and kidney damage if not treated early. PUV is often detected during pregnancy or soon after birth, and timely management by a paediatric urologist is essential to protect bladder function and long-term kidney health.

  • Extra tissue in the urethra blocks urine flow in newborn boys.
  • Causes weak urine stream, straining, and urinary infections.
  • Often detected on prenatal or postnatal ultrasound.
  • Treatment includes catheter drainage and endoscopic valve ablation.
  • Early management helps protect the bladder and kidneys long-term.
